Theft proof bike designs and more

Just a quick post today; I want to mention the One Hour Design Challenge winner at the Core77 blog. The Core site gave forum participants one hour to design and post a theft proof bicycle concept. The seat/lock concept shown here was chosen as the winner, but you can see all of the entries on the forum thread. There are 4 pages total and I suggest you look at them all. It is fun to see some of the quick concepts that were obviously thought up on the spot.

Since it is April fools day, you probably woke up this morning expecting to see a few posts like this one (more here). Obviously, I am not going to fall for anything like that. Now you will all have to excuse me while I run home to wrap my aluminum frame in carbon. What a great idea; the wonders of modern technology never cease to amaze me.

As a security guy with knowledge and passion for both information and physical security, I have to say none of the concepts are theft-proof, but I really liked some of them for their simplicity and potential ease of implementation. Cable locks are notoriously easy to get through with hack saws or even cheap diagonal pliers, but in an urban setting where the least secure bikes are the ones that get stolen first, every bit helps.

You have to love devices that shock would-be thieves, though. Haha!

…obviously some of these designs had been sitting around in craniums for a while & a few were thought out on the spot…

…nothing impressed me as a practical ‘theft proof’ lock…some of the ideas are so far fetched as to loose the beauty & simplicity of the bike…

…i could imagine there might be potential in the idea of ‘cut-proof’ straps as opposed to cables but i have no expertise in that area…

…w/ that said, i’d have to choose the cable lock & the vicious dog…
a dog w/ a loud bark, a nasty bite & me close by w/ a baseball bat…

Yep – the big snarly dog gets my vote. I also thought the cable full of paint was an interesting idea . . . though I could see a certain type of scroat setting ’em off on purpose. You get back to your bike, and find it covered in wet paint – just perfect for the ride home!

bikesgonewild, you are right that some of these ideas look like they were thought out way ahead of time. I tended to like the ones that were loosely sketched based on a first idea. The dog one and the shock lock were two of my favorites. I also liked the bike lock 2.0 one on page 3, mainly because of the narrative quality of the sketch layout.
