Ellsworth interview on Industry Outsider

Industry Outsider is a new blog that some of you may have seen mentioned on Cyclelicious recently. If you are not already reading the IO blog, you should definitely check it out. Brian just started the blog a couple of weeks ago, but he already has some great content, including an interview with Tony Ellsworth. This quote from Tony caught my attention; “My design philosophy is to not offend any of the natural wonders of cycling. Not to make inefficient frame designs, not to make bikes that look cool or have some faux new look or function, but to make bikes that bring real innovation and real advantage to the sport and art of cycling. My design philosophy is to think harder to make things more simple, efficient, aesthetically pleasing.” Can’t argue with that. Check out the full post for more. Also, if you are not already familiar with the NuVinci CVP equipped “The Ride” cruiser, check out the renderings on The Ride website. Oh yeah; while I’m on the subject of interviews, keep checking Bicycle Design for some good ones that will be coming up soon.

While I’m posting, I also want to link to an excellent Design Stamp piece that I found via the Brand Builder Blog. This is not bike specific, but after reading it, I could not resist passing it along. Good stuff.

I really think Ellsworth missed with this “ride” bike… maybe its just me, but doesn’t it contradict the quote just referenced? I do have an appreciation for a good cruiser bike, and I do like Ellsworth as a brand (I had a Specialist and loved it), but this concept just doesn’t fit in the Ellsworth family, even on the extreme end. And even what they have produced isn’t very easy on the eyes.. just my rant… sorry

Shane, I see your point, but I think this bike looks pretty nice. The way that the frame is made up of two curves is simple and, I think, aesthetically pleasing for a bike of this type. As I have said before, I am also a big fan of the NuVinci drivetrain, so that certainly influences my impression of this bike.

I don’t blame Ellsworth for wanting to get into this market. Other foot forward designs that allow the rider to place his feet flat on the ground while seated seam to be selling very well. Those types of bikes are not suited to the type of riding that I do and don’t really appeal to me personally, but if they get more people to ride, then I am all for them.

During the summer, my wife and I will go out at 10 at night and ride around parking lots like we’re kids again. I’ve had a lot of bikes over the years, but there’s just something about the laid back position, and wide bars that puts grins on our faces.

p.s. I followed up that interview with one from Dave Moulton.

    Hi James:

Thanks for the mention of our blog over at DesignStamp. Look forward to seeing you again at DesignStamp Opinion again!

I should pull my bike out, if for no other reason than to get those nice biker legs that you are showing off! 😉
