Kaylad-e: an electric trike concept by Dimitris Niavis

Kaylad-e: an electric trike concept by Dimitris NiavisEvery once and a while, I get busy with work and other projects and allow a really great design submission to fall through the cracks. Greek industrial designer Dimitris Niavis’ Kaylad-e concept is a perfect example of that. Niavis sent me a message about his e-trike project about a month ago, but I somehow overlooked it until now. If you follow other design blogs, you have probably already seen the electric trike concept that Niavis created for his thesis/graduation project late last year. It is a great looking design that definitely deserves the exposure.

“The brief was to design a hybrid vehicle for commuting in the modern metropolis.

Kaylad-e aims to help people make the shift to active means of transport in a safe, stylish and enjoyable manner.

Everyone enjoys different things in an experience. This is due to different mindsets, culture, situations, environment etc.

Fun and enjoyment was one of the most important guidelines of Kaylad-e.

The first goal was to remove as many of the stress factors and discomfort of commuting by bicycle as possible. Thus enabling the rider to enjoy all the aspects of the ride.

The second was to create a product that will last and mature over time. Choice of materials and the ability to adapt to new technology [battery, motor etc.] are a crucial step in that direction.”

While you are there, be sure to watch his video which covers many of the features of the Kaylad-e concept trike (integrated lock, mid drive motor, removable battery, GPS and saddle lock, integrated lights, bag rack, etc.).  I think you will agree that this is a nice design and a great presentation! Glad I didn’t miss it entirely.

Very pretty, but looks very heavy and all the extras scream very expensive. I also find it hard to believe that a small motor and battery will be sufficient to power it. And that front rack better be strong enough to carry a person, because I imagine many people will be begging for rides!

Looks great. Think you could bodge something similar together using the sistema noomad converter and a bike of your choice (I’d probably pick the tonaro compy) to create something very similar.

As someone in the design profession, this trike is a wonderful concept in innovative and forward ideas. However, being that I am the typical American that is ~ 40lbs over weight, I have to (sort of) side with Impossibly Stupid; the electric assistance not only adds to complexity of the trike but validates how much we refuse to do any real work. I say this as someone who rides to work Mon-Fri and does most of my shopping with my trusty commuter.

    Awesome concept!

I stopped going to car shows because I got sick and tired of seeing the coolest concept cars imagined, but NEVER seeing them come to life in the following years. I hope production of this trike becomes reality.

Is this bike available for purchase? Are there any distributors wholesalers retailers in Southern California where I live?
