NAHBS 2012

After a long day of work in Shanghai, I am back in my hotel room anxiously looking through photos of bikes from the 2012 North American Handmade Bicycle Show, which took place in Sacramento this weekend. It was another record breaking year for the show with over 8,000 visitors in attendance, and it looks like there were some pretty amazing bikes to impress them all. So far, I have been checking out the photo galleries at BikeRadar, UrbanVelo, Cyclelicious, and Road.cc…and wishing that I had been there to see all of these bikes in person.

As was the case in 2011, a striking Cherubim track bike by Shin-Ichi Konno was the first to immediately get my attention as I browsed through the online photos. It’s no surprise that his bike (shown in the photo above from UrbanVelo.org) was awarded the “President’s choice” and “Best of show” awards at the close of the show yesterday. The “People’s Choice” award went to another pretty impressive bike, the 1888 Whippet replica built by Paul Brodie, who teaches framebuilding 101 at the University of the Fraser Valley in British Columbia.

The really interesting bikes from the show are too numerous to mention, but I’ll list a few more that caught my attention as I browsed the photo galleries- the Ahearne snow expedition bike, the sub-11 lb steel road bike by Rob English, Sycip’s cargo trike with an integrated u-lock, a 36er from Black Sheep, and the beautiful MAP Cycles disc-Ville (shown here).  I could go on and on listing bikes that I liked, but I don’t have much time. Besides, I encourage you to check out photos of all the bikes if you haven’t already. It looks like there was definitely something for everyone at the show.

The convention center was packed on Saturday – unbelievable crowds who were knowledgable and some of whom wrote orders and checks. Great weather too for the many bike activities around town. The out-of-towners were all impressed with Sacramento’s bike friendliness.

Thanks for the mention. John Prolly also has good photos at his website.

Yeah, I’m bummed I missed it this year. It sounds like another great one.
