I was at the Manifest on Saturday and was wondering about the rider who rolled across the finish line first, number 27. The officials put the bike and rider off to the side and not a word was said about them. It was a very interesting looking cargo bike and I heard several people in the crowd asking what was going on. I stopped and chatted with the rider for few minutes and he said the bike was built by Vimana but had been disqualified from the competition because it had not been finished in time for the judging. It just seemed kind of odd like the officials didn't know what to do with a bike and rider that had clearly made the 50 mile test and rolled in far ahead of the rest of the field. The bike was obviously a well built and capable cargo hauler. And apparently fast. The crowd seemed surprised that a cargo bike finished first. Any one have a clue what that was about?

I actually think it remarkably fitting

"Jeans were the ultimate modern utility pants: innovative, riveted, rugged pants designed for living and working, pants that 140 years ago were not available in your local dry good store."

I applaud the initiative and its seriousness: the idea of ID firms teaming up with real bike builders is salvatory.
But "the ultimate modern utility bike: a bike designed as an integrated Tool For Living that is yet to be found on the retail floor"? Don't they have Dutch bikes where you live, Shannon Holt? [/euroretrogrouch]

Would somebody please make some fenders out of mylar that totally enclose the wheels? Each wheel could be entirely shielded from the airstream except for the tire patch. Such fenders would cost almost nothing next to the cost of aero wheels. Even stock fenders, a bit of heat sensitive plastic and some tape or adhesive and there you would be. Such fenders would be useful on velomobiles, too.

I am both hopeful and scared at what may come out of this. As this is the type of bike I spend the majority of my time on, I will be paying attention to see what comes of the step towards mainstream.

Sponsored by Levi's? I couldn't be more confused.
