Biomega Bamboo in Milan

I am home in Greenville right now, but I really wish I were in Milan for design week. Around the time of Salone Di Mobile and Euroluce, the Italian city is the place to be for anyone with an interest in design. Though the Salone is a furniture fair, at least a few bikes seem to make an appearance each year. In fact, I have posted about bike related products at the show quite a few times on the blog; here, here, here, and here are just a few examples.

Starting this week in Milan, from April 22nd to 27th, Biomega will be displaying the Ross Lovegrove designed Bamboo (pictured here). It will be presented at the Design Library, Via Savona 11, 20144 Milano from 10 am to 10 pm each day. Furthermore, Biomega extends an invitation to all cyclists for a special event this week:

“On Thursday 23rd, Ross Lovegrove, Jens Martin Skibsted, founder of Biomega, and a group of fellow designers will take some of the world’s most beautiful bikes out for a ride – inviting you and all bike enthusiasts with a bike of their own to join them in experiencing Furniture for Locomotion at it’s best.

This spectacular bike ride will start off at the Design Library at 11am and end the same place, where there will be time to have a bite to eat and a drink while discussing the designs of Ross Lovegrove and Jens Martin Skibsted.”

Sounds like fun to me. Let me know if any of you attend the ride and the discussion to follow.

In other bike design related news, Mark Sanders alerted me to an article in the UK Design Council magazine about the Shimano and IDEO research that lead to the Coasting group and bikes like the Trek Lime. It is a short article, but pretty interesting. Take a look here (registration required) or you can read the copy that Mark uploaded to Issuu if you prefer.

Lastly, since I just linked to Mark’s Twitter profile, I will mention that Bicycle Design is now on Twitter as well. I can’t promise that I will update the Twitter feed consistently, but it does seem like a good way to occasionally pass along quick links and ideas that I don’t have time to post on the blog. Follow along @bicycledesign if you are interested and we will see how this twittering (or is it tweeting) thing goes for me.

The Biomega video is awsome, as are most of their bikes, and philosophy (Denmark is a mecca for plain clothes cycling for all http://www.copenhagencyclechic.com ). Thanks for the reminder.

Cute ,another high end bamboo bicycle . Here , lets’ make a really expensive bicycle out of one of the world’s most common and inexpensive plants . I’m not the only one that can see how absurd that is am I ? Why isn’t anyone working on easy to build , practical , and cheap bamboo bicycles for people with really low incomes . Frankly ,the moving parts could be reused after the old frame was broken .You could basically make plug and play bottom brackets and head sets . Yet again use KISS “keep it simple stupid “. All these really cool high tech bicycles are great for less then one percent of the worlds population .Steel , aluminum , titanium ,and carbon fiber are great materials for designers .But ,if you have a cheap strong material why not make bikes for the other 99% of the population . For the prices that are being asked why not just get a carbon fiber frame .These high end bamboo bikes are just so the Limousine Liberals won’t feel so guilty .It’s all about “Oh, look at me see how earth friendly I am .” Let’s be real if you ride ANY bicycle regularly it is good for the environment . I am in favor of reducing or stopping pollution not just putting on a show for my rich neighbors .

Hey, James have you checked out Goblin Motors yet ? It seems to be a velomobile with power assist .They seem to be converting other people’s recumbents with thier fairings . Any thoughts ?

Ron, so far I am not tweeting like Basso…or much at all really. A few other issues have the blog on the backburner right now

Randomray, I understand your point and I try to post about and discuss bike design issues for the majority of the world when I can (here for instance). It is certainly a topic that I would like to discuss further, so if you have any specific ideas or links along those lines, please pass them along.

…and thanks for mentioning Goblin Motors. Interesting stuff.

We are currently in the process of design and engineering a low cost babmoo bike frame here in China. Design is a little similar to the Lovegrove frame.
The team are also testing a range of recycled materials for other components, which may or may not get releases depending on results.
We will have options to purchase whole bike or just the frame.
We are also exploring the option of “kit” form to reduce shipping costs and space waste in transport.
Currently in testing phase with aim to release bike in 2010.
