Rest in peace Sheldon

Just over a year ago, I heard that Sheldon Brown had primary-progressive MS and could no longer ride a bike. I was saddened to just learn from Fritz at Cyclelicious that Sheldon passed away last night.

I never actually met Sheldon Brown, but I have known of him though his webpages since the mid nineties. His fixed gear pages were probably some of the first bike related websites that I ever bookmarked, and I still reference his many bike related pages today. I hope that Sheldon’s sites will stay up as a tribute to someone who gave so much to the world of cycling. Captain Bike freely contributed a ton of knowledge to many of us. He will definitely be missed by many.

I feel so sad for his wife and kids. I never met Mr. Brown; like thousands of cyclists I only knew him through his website. It was bad enough when I learned of his illness after seeing a photo of him at a bike show using a walker, his passing just seems so cruel. In addition to all of the cycling knowledge he has left the community, I think his website is a good reminder to try to live a life full of interests and passions since you never really know when it all may end.

…it wasn’t just the amazing amount of knowledge he possessed but his gracious generosity in offering it to anyone who needed it…

…a detailed english/spanish bicycle parts translator ?…wow, who else cared enough to take the time to offer that kind of dedication ???…

That is sad news…

Who’s going to wear that eagle helmet now?

I do hope that website is still up, last I check it’s down. prob because everyone is going there hearing this…

I was doing some simple bike research on line the other night. Like how much bigger my front chainring needs to be if my rear rub cog has 2 more teeth. It’s simply impossible to find any bike knowledge on the web and not come across Sheldon Brown and his encyclopedia of web knoweldge. It’s great to know he can keep giving even after he’s gone. Rest in peace, my friend.

I just found out. I never met Sheldon Brown but I learned tons from what he knew about bikes. Anytime I looked up something about bicycle construction or anything out of the ordinary, his wicked informative site was (and still is!) there. From what I can tell, he was hugely dedicated to bicycling and human power. He will be remembered.designs
