Strida update and more

I haven’t mentioned it since I first received the bike last week, but I have been riding the Strida quite a bit. My time playing around with that bike is coming to an end though. I’ll be traveling all next week and I plan to ship the bike back before I leave. If I don’t get a chance to post about it while I am on the road, I will do so after I return. In the mean time, check out a few pictures of the bike that I posted on Flickr.

I mentioned in the earlier post that my four year old really liked the Strida when he first saw it. When I got home from work yesterday, he showed me this picture that he drew of me with the “little triangle bike”. He told me that he drew it to show his friends at preschool how cool it is (he uses the word “cool” all the time; can’t imagine where he picked that up). One thing I can definitely say about the Strida is that it does attract a lot of attention, around here anyway. I ride all kinds of different bikes around Greenville, but none of them seem to turn heads like this little folder.

I also want to pass along a link to some renderings and photos of an interesting Cargo bike concept. I like the design and I am definitely a fan of the Nuvinci hub, so I am interested to see if this gets into production. Thanks to Fritz for the tip.

Speaking of bikes and cargo, watch this film that a reader, John, sent to me. Amazing; I love it.

Lastly, I want to mention something that is a little off topic, the People’s 50 Million Lottery Giveaway in the UK. If you are reading this from the UK, go to the site and vote for the Sustrans cycling campaign. Even if you don’t live in the UK, like me, the site is worth checking out. You can read more about it here and here.

As I mentioned earlier, I will be gone next week. I’ll post if I can, but it is sometimes hard to find the time during a business trip.

…the strida is as cool as ever, although i must confess i didn’t notice the belt drive before…very interesting…
…the kids style is reminiscent of a young picasso, but i don’t wanna get yer hopes up…
…the truck bike is cool although the bolt on racks could be scary w/ an unbalanced heavy load…
…john’s portland video is ultra-cool…but while being environmentally sound, the cost of good beer to sooth all those pumped up savage breasts would be astronomical…

    …good post w/ cool links…

Did you have any trouble with your knees bumping the handlebars? The strida looks like a great little bike, and the price is right. However, I’m 6’5″ and I’m wondering whether it would be reasonable for someone my size. What were your overall impressions of this bike from the tall guy point of view?

p.s. thanks for the awesome sight

    Thanks for the comments everyone.

Rhubarb, I am about 3 inches shorter than you, but I positioned the seat to the max height that allowed my knees to barely clear the bottom of the bars. As you can tell from the photo in the first post, the seat height on the Strida was much lower than I usually position my seat, but it was OK for short distances. The longest distance I rode the bike at one time was less than 5 miles, so the lower seat with less leg extension was not really a problem. It did feel a little strange having my knees right below my hands when I pedaled at a very high cadence. Of course, sprinting is not what the bike was intended for. Because I am used to bikes with a fairly significant drop between the seat and the handlebars, the extreme upright and compacted position did take a little getting used to. Still, for short rides at a casual pace, the bike felt quite comfortable to me.

I actually saw one of these last night here in San Diego. My daughter and I were out having dinner and one went riding by us. Then they guy locked it up right outside of the window. It looked pretty cool and ridden pretty regularly.

Do you know what brand the base of that cargo concept bike is? I don’t need a cargo bike but I really like the size of the base bike. thanks! mb

A lot of useful information in those links, thanks. I feel that it might even be too much for me to “digest” in just one week.
