I’m back

I thought that I would get a chance to post from the road last week, but it just wasn’t in the cards. I was way to busy with work. I happened to be in Dallas, Texas on business all week, and I hoped that I would have a chance to swing by a new bike shop, Uptown Cycles. That didn’t happen either, but maybe next time. I don’t really make a point to visit all the local bike shops when I travel, but this one seems a little different. I heard about them because they are the only Biomega dealer in the southern U.S. After first checking out the shop’s website, I realized that they are not your average bike shop. Based on the site, I think they have taken a great approach to differentiating themselves in a hip urban market. It really does look like a cool place and I like the way they are marketing the shop. One of these days when I am in Dallas, I’ll check them out.

Okay, it’s time for me to get back to work, but I’ll get at least one more post out this week before I break for Christmas. Until then, check out this video on Fresh Creation of some bikes that were filmed during Dutch Design week.

    Dallas continually makes lists for being one of the worst cities in America for cycling. Let’s hope that a bike shop that seems to focus on urban riding and commuter bikes can make some difference and drive the city to make the city more cycling friendly. It is at least a step in the right direction.

    You are right Robo. Dallas is definitely a poster child for sprawl. I have seen many parts of the metro area where I would not feel safe on my bike (I used to bike commute to work in Atlanta so I am not easily scared by traffic). There is a lot of fairly dense urban development going on in the Uptown area where this new shop is located, which means walking and cycling are becoming more viable as options for getting around. I hope that some of the city’s new downtown residents who buy the new lofts and condos will consider using bikes for transportation.

    I love the looks of the Biomega products
    but not so sure about the price tag

    have only seen their bikes hanging in NY shops as art

    Uptown Cycles is my local shop (I live 2 miles from it). It is a cool place to go, Donovan (the owner) is a great guy who welcomes cyclists of all types and abilities. My wife is getting a Biomega Copenhagen from him this coming weekend.

    As for Dallas and cycling: I’ve lived here since 1989, and have been cycling here that entire time. Other than jackass drivers on occasion, I’ve never had any problems. The city installed bike racks in the Downtown area last summer. The local transit authority, DART, allows bikes on buses and trains. The city really has become more bike- and cyclist-friendly over the years.

    I would be very cautious about buying a Biomega. My own experience has not been good, especially about Biomega honoring their 3 year warranty. Specifically, about eight months after purchasing a Biomega Copenhagen, I started to experience a grinding noise coming from the pedal crank case, where the gears connect the shaft of the pedal with the drive shaft. What I observed was a wobbling pedal shaft, because apparently either the crank case cap was improperly fitted or not tightened enough. The worst part was trying to get Biomega to honor their warranty or effectuate a remedy. Based on my experience, I wouldn’t count on obtaining any support from Biomega. The bottom line: I regret having bought a chain less bicycle, but more so a bicycle made by Biomega. Choose another manufacturer.
