Does any one have a 3d bicycle model to share?

Recently, I have received a few emails from readers who are looking for 3d computer models of road or mountain bikes. They want to use them as a template for a new design that they are toying with or as a structure for designing parts. Since I haven’t taken the time to model any bikes in 3d (at least not since I modeled this rear half of a bike 10 plus years ago), I can’t really help them out. Does anybody know a source on the web for files like this? I have seen dxf and studio max models of bicycles on the web at places like 3d Café and High End 3d, but generally these are very rough models of bikes to be used in a scene and are not very accurately constructed. If you know of a source for a good detailed bicycle model, please leave a comment.

One of these days, I will model a 3d road bike myself in Rhino, but who knows when I’ll ever get around to it. Free time is pretty hard to find. Besides, Spring is in the air and I would much rather be riding outside than sitting at a computer.

Hi, I’m currently working at Nicolai and have been doing some work on the GCON standard. This is the standard for gearbox transmission bicycles, information can be found at g-boxx.org Also on the same site under CAD DATA are CAD models for people wanting to design or manufacture a gearbox bike. There is some data available for the main frame and rear triangle. Hope this helps – Joe

PS I’m an Industrial Design Graduate and I want to design bikes. Do you have any advice on how I could get into the industry?

Hi Joe, Sounds like interesting work that you are doing. If you are interested in making contacts in the bike industry, send me some samples of related design work that you have done. I would be happy to post a few images along with your contact info so that any interested industry people can contact you.

Hi, design bikes you would like to have for yourself…. and who knows…. maybe you will find the same luck as I did last year! One of my designs is being produced in semi-large numbers at this moment. Check my site for more info on this. Greetz and good luck!

I’m working on a Lightwave model of my Columbia 2005 Comfort Bike, because I want to model many variations of some modifications I’ll be doing to it, before I actually start the work. Before I committed to spending all that time, though I did a hunt for models too (which is still ongoing).

Some free models I’ve found, which may not be detailed enough for everyone’s purpose:

    Some free parts:

There are also purchaseable models I located as well, but I don’t know how detailed they are, either:
Several complete bikes as well as just detailed parts are here:
