Industry Nine wheels

Just up the road from me in Asheville, NC, the engineers at Industry Nine have been busy developing innovative new bicycle wheels. Not only do these wheels look great, but they also they have a lower rotational mass than conventional wheel designs. Spoke nipples are eliminated in the Industry Nine design, but the machined aluminum spokes can be still be trued with a conventional spoke wrench thanks to the milled flat sections near the threads. The spokes thread directly into the machined hub for a really clean look. Nice wheels! I’d love to head up to Asheville one of these days to see how they are made.

I found this via Lincoln’s brand new Bicycle Tech blog. If you like my blog, I recommend that you check out his as well. There are only a few posts so far, but I think he is doing a great job of covering innovative new bicycle products. Keep up the good work Lincoln, I’ll be reading.

What if the spoke breaks just above the tread, so it got stuck in the hub? That kind of breakage happens with normal wheels.

Hey James nice blog! Industry nine wheels are SWEET looking! They have even started making a lefty compatible hub.
    Nice links as well!
The velo kitty shirt is going to join my collection as well.
I have a degree in Industrial Design. How did you get a job?! Heheehe

Jeanthibica- Good point, but I believe the only reason that happens with standard wheels is because the spoke is stressed at the bend in the manufacturing process. I have not seen the same problem with straight pull spokes, have you?

Cass- Thanks for the blog compliment. It is interesting to hear that you have a design degree, but honestly, my job is not nearly as exciting as yours. How do you get to be a pro mountain biker anyway? Oh yeah, I guess you have to be really fast; I’ll just have to stick with design for now. Seriously though, congrats on the new Cannondale sponsorship. Best of luck to you this season.

According to the guys at Industry 9 the spokes accept a small allen key in the end. So if you do break it if at the hub you can screw it out. Trick.
